What Makes a Ford Truck "OBS"?

By FordTruckBuyer.com · Published 2026-10-29

Where the name came from

When Ford introduced a new, rounder F-150 for the 1997 model year, people began calling the earlier, squarer trucks the "old body style." The abbreviation stuck.

What it covers

Usage varies, but OBS most commonly refers to the late-1980s and 1990s F-Series pickups. Heavy-duty F-250 and F-350 models kept the older body for a while after the new F-150 arrived.

What it doesn't cover

  • 1997–1999 F-150s and the light-duty F-250 built on that platform, the newer body style
  • 1999 Super Duty trucks, a separate, newer design
  • Earlier "bullnose" trucks from the early 1980s

Why it matters when selling

OBS trucks, especially heavy-duty diesels and crew cabs, have a strong following. Getting the description right, year, model, cab, engine, helps a buyer understand your truck quickly.
