7.3L IDI vs. 7.3L Power Stroke: How to Tell Them Apart
By FordTruckBuyer.com · Published 2026-10-29
Two engines, one size
Both are 7.3 liters, and both appeared in Ford's heavy-duty pickups, which is why they get confused. They are not the same engine, and the names shouldn't be used interchangeably.
The 7.3L IDI
- Indirect injection
- Offered from the 1988 model year to mid-1994
- A factory turbocharged version was offered in 1993–1994
- Followed the 6.9L IDI, offered for 1983–1987
The 7.3L Power Stroke
- Direct injection, turbocharged
- Introduced in mid-1994, often called "1994.5"
- Offered through 2003
Which trucks had them
In this era, these diesels were offered in F-250 and F-350 heavy-duty pickups, not the F-150. If someone describes a diesel F-150 from these years, it's worth a closer look.
How to tell which you have
- Model year and build date: a mid-1994 truck could have either
- Badging on the truck, if original
- Engine-bay photos: a buyer familiar with both can usually tell at a glance
- The VIN engine code and paperwork
